About Dr. Anderson Print

Dr. Allen F, Anderson Nashville, Orthopaedic Sports MedicineDr. Anderson is a 1976 graduate of University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in general orthopaedics. He also has a certificate of added qualification for Sports Medicine.

A specialist in sports medicine with a knee interest in knee injury and ligament reconstruction, Dr. Anderson was influenced by his years as an athlete and by Dr. Brant Lipscomb, Sr., a pioneer in sports medicine, whom he considers his mentor. Dr. Anderson has a thorough understanding of the unique needs of athletes with regard to treatment and prevention of injuries. He participated in a variety of youth athletics, including baseball, football, track and wrestling. He was captain of his high school football team and a TSSAA football AllStar. He was voted Most Athletic. During his college years, he participated in athletics at the University of Tennessee.

In an effort to continuously improve patient care, Dr. Anderson has continued to perform research and publish scientific articles. He published 4 scientific articles in 2012 and 2013, bringing a total to more than 80 scientific articles published in sports medicine books and various sports medicine journals. He has also had 20 scientific exhibits at National and International orthopaedic meetings. At the 2012 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Meeting, he presented an award-winning video on Transepiphyseal, Physeal Sparing, ACL Reconstruction. He was also involved in a symposium on Pediatric Sports Medicine. At the AAOS Specialty Day in 2012, Dr. Anderson presented another symposium on ACL Reconstruction in Skeletally Immature Athletes.

His instructional course lectures in 2012 and 2013, brings the total to 82 national/international presentations and 30 instructional course lectures to other orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr. Anderson was selected as an examiner and test writer for both the general orthopaedic boards and the certificate of added qualification for sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which provides Board Certification for orthopaedic surgeons in the United States.

In recognition for his commitment to sports medicine, Dr. Anderson was asked to be the visiting Professor at the Universities of Vermont and Cincinnati. He was appointed Associate Editor of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and The Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. He was a member of the Medical Publishing Board of Trustees of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Canby Robinson Society at Vanderbilt University and the Board of Directors of the International Cartilage Repair Society. Dr. Anderson is Chairman of the International Knee Documentation Committee, which sets standards for orthopaedic surgeons around the world to use to evaluate the results of treatment.

He is also a Chairman of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Research Scientific Advisory Committee, which assists sports medicine physicians in conducting scientific research in the United States. In 2013, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the Executive Committee of the exclusive Herodicus Society, and the presidential line as Vice President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He also served as the "Godfather" for the AOSSM/APKASS Traveling Fellowship to the Pacific Rim countries in 2013.

In 2010, he was honored by the Nashville Business Journal as a Health Care Hero. Dr. Anderson was voted into America's Top Orthopaedists in 2013 for the eleventh consecutive year by the Consumer's Research Council of America, and to the Best Doctors in America by peers, Top Doctors, and Patient's Choice Recognition Award.

Outside the work setting, Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time with his wife, Candy, and three sons, Brian, David and Chris. He also enjoys fly fishing and upland bird hunting.
